Mylor Archive Centre Newsletter - June 2008
The Tremayne Hall technical installation is now progressing and all the computers have our website (address www.tremaynehall.org) available offline, so you can come in and view it. This newsletter appears on the Archive Centre pages and there are reports on recent and future events as well as bookings for the current fortnight and many other useful and interesting details.
Chairman's report - Val
The Archive Centre is up and running after its first six months. It is open to the community every Thursday afternoon with a rota of volunteers manning it. Teas are available for visitors and for the public during the summer. The majority of projects outlined in our original proposals have been achieved or commenced as follows: - furnishing and equipping of both rooms; illustrated booklet of walks; recording of elderly people's memories; regular newsletter; computer teaching; local history talks and displays - Althea's display of old postcards being the most recent. A Treasure Hunt Quiz is planned and it we hope to have a historical pageant in the future.
Treasurer's report - Janet
Our remaining grant is £3570. We have asked for an extension in spending this and an extra three months has been granted by Awards for All. The balance of our own funds is now £900. Income from talks was £114 and from teas £77. A donation from the over 50's club of £10 has been received. Expenditure includes an annual contribution of £200 to the Tremayne Hall towards heating, lighting and insurance. We need blinds for the Reading Room and also a folding screen.
Library - Janet
Book numbers are growing thanks to generous gifts and books are now catalogued by card index. Members may borrow books after entering their details. Janet has added two illustrated books on St Agnes following a recent talk.
Talks - Rosemary
30 - 40 people attended each of two successful talks. Future meetings are planned: -
Fri 12 Sept; Richard Trevithick and the History of Steam by Kingsley Ricard
Fri 2 Oct; The Saints Way by Peter Robinson
Fri 14 Nov; The Ports of Cornwall by Russell Holt
All talks start at 7 pm in the Pope Room, Tremayne Hall.
Records - Larrie
Larrie has labelled the boxes and our thanks to her for her attractive pictures. Perhaps her drawings could be used for notelets in the future. Larrie reported that the W.I. have disbanded and they handed their records to us. Their beautiful book of Mylor Churchyard of 1987 can be photocopied for handling and we might display the original on a seasonal basis.
Film project - Sheila
'A Year in the Life of Mylor' is going really well. A sub-committee deals with this and Sheila would like offers of help as the co-ordination and contact establishment is very time consuming. Barbara Scully, chairman of the Penryn Video Editing Group is co-ordinating the editing of the film by her members. The project may have to produce separate subject DVDs because of the amount of material.
Sheila has some material lent by Peter Gilson about the Ukrainians in Mylor, which we can copy for the archive. On Saturday 7 June at 11 am a short service will be held at the Memorial at which all are welcome and which is to be filmed. Afterwards, there will be a reception and exhibition in the Tremayne Hall.
Interview project - Felicity and Val
A start has been made, with video interviews of Mary Young, Len and Margaret Simpson and Major Collier and more are planned.
Fund raising - Everyone!
On 28 June, from 10 am to 3 pm, the group will have a table at the Table Top Sale in the Tremayne Hall. Items for sale of any kind are needed please; also offers to join a rota of helpers to man the stall. Bunny will be co-ordinating, so please contact her if you can donate items or help. Oh, and do come and support us.
