Turn left for the Antarctic - a talk by Chris (Kipper) Hughes

(20 January 2006)

This talk by Chris (Kipper) Hughes was originally scheduled for 25 November of 2005 but our freak snow storm of that day caused a change in plan. With the snow falling thick and fast during the afternoon, we began to wonder if the talk could (or even should) take place. Chris was contacted and he said, "Don't cancel - I'll be there!" He had to abandon his own car in St Austell and made his way to Truro by train, but that was as far as his ride went. The snowstorm had closed all the roads and Chris walked from the train station in Truro to his home in Devoran - he would have come on to Mylor had we not called him back and said, no we feel we must postpone his talk.

We thought Chris had gone a bit far in setting the atmosphere for his talk on his adventures as the ship's dentist with the Antarctic Survey Team!

Because the ceiling of Tremayne Hall had begun to fall down, we had had to close the Hall to the public and many of the events we had booked were forced to find alternate venues - including our own events! Chris' talk was finally held in an absolutely packed Parish Hall on 20 January 2006 (a perfect illustration of why we really need to press on with the restoration of Tremayne Hall).

The wait was well worth it as those who attended were enthralled by tales of life onboard the survey ship and the stopover in the Antarctic accompanied by many beautiful (and some very amusing) slides he had taken. Although we all enjoyed his talk tremendously, the general feeling was that this type of adventure was, for most of us, a spectator sport!
